Angshu Plavan Nath
Hi, thanks for stopping by. I am Angshu, a Ph.D. student in the field of Electric Vehicles. Currently I am working on provision of grid support services from electric vehicles (EV), in which strong emphasis is being given on provision of active and reactive power support from EVs and EV charging stations during periods of contingency.
Research Goal
With due concerns to the global climate change, the automobile sector is witnessing a gradual shift to electric vehicles (EV) including battery electric vehicles (BEV), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). The Govt. of India has also launched the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicle Phase I(FAME I) and Phase II (FAME II) schemes with a goal of increasing EV growth in the country. In contrast with increasing penetration of EVs, the power system infrastructure would need modifications to cater to the increased load in the system. EV integration introduces challenges both to the transmission network and to the distribution network as listed under
Impact on the Transmission Network
Increase in peak load
Congestion in transmission corridors
Increase in electricity price
Increased ramping requirement
Impact on the Distribution Network
Transformer and cable overloading
Impact on voltage profile
Voltage imbalances
Introduction of harmonics
Increased losses
But EVs being mobile storage units can also bring great flexibility to the power system. Therefore through my Ph.D., I am determined to address the following,
Identification and ranking of the key recommendations that can potentially lead to widespread deployment of EV charging infrastructure in India.
Provision of active power support from the collective EV fleet while taking into consideration the stochasticity of number of EVs plugged-in to the grid at any point of time. This can potentially support the grid during contingency periods and help maintain the stability of the power system.
Reactive power from EV Charging Stations for provision of voltage support.
